If you are questioning the reality of your emotions, it means you are questioning your emotional awareness. The result is most likely low. 😊 When evaluating your emotions, you might even be labeling surface-level feelings as the core emotion. But what true emotions lie beneath these superficial feelings? First and foremost, we must recognize emotions. To fully uncover our emotions, let’s explore the concept of emotional awareness.
So how can we recognize our own emotions?
Being aware of ourselves and our emotions means having an open mind, body, consciousness, and energy. It is the state of being fully present in the moment and consciously distinguishing between emotions. Discovering new aspects of oneself is also a form of awareness. Sometimes, turning inward and drawing lessons from both positive and negative life experiences is necessary.
However, we cannot expect everyone to develop the same level of awareness—the ability to recognize, understand, and interpret one's own emotions and those of others. This is not a God-given talent or some kind of mind-reading ability.
Rather, it should be understood as the ability to perceive and interpret a person’s emotions by analyzing their energy, body language, and words. Truly understanding what someone is thinking and feeling requires being present and fully concentrating on the moment. To achieve this, we must train our brains to stay in the present.
For effective communication, it is crucial to recognize emotions and consciously give them meaning.
What Do We Gain by Developing Emotional Awareness?
What should we do to increase our awareness? When we become aware of our actions and ourselves, we can understand life more deeply. The best place to start is acceptance.
When someone we communicate with says, “You don’t understand me!” what they actually mean is “You lack emotional awareness,” right? Instead of just listening to respond, we must listen with awareness, with full attention. Being present in the moment, dedicating time, and focusing deeply is essential. This allows us to better understand, analyze, and interpret the other person. It also helps us show that we truly value them.
Another benefit of emotional awareness is that it serves as a guide for us. It helps us recognize what makes us angry, why we act impulsively, and how we reflect ourselves onto others. This awareness guides us in making correct interpretations about ourselves. It also allows us to see the areas where we need to grow and where we need support.
Additionally, self-aware individuals make better decisions and choices in life. They make successful decisions by considering not only logic but also emotions, weighing the pros and cons to make a well-rounded choice.
Emotional awareness can also serve as a preventive factor before reaching states of depression and anxiety. By identifying and understanding past emotions, we can analyze their impact and take action before they become overwhelming. Many life events can lead to harmful habits or addictions. However, those with high emotional awareness experience such issues less frequently because they recognize negative experiences and take steps to prevent them from recurring.
In this “virtual world” we live in, we often mistake unimportant things for significant ones and miss out on truly meaningful moments. Increasing our awareness can help us avoid this. 😊
I love this quote by Mevlana Rumi:"A person wakes up when they die—wake up before you die."
Let’s wake up. Let’s become aware.
Based on my experiences, I would like to conclude my writing with the following recommendations:
Be aware of yourself, your emotions, and your mistakes. In relationships, let’s practice empathy, listen without judgment, and listen to understand. Let’s always work on improving our awareness.
For this, I recommend watching Nuri Bilge Ceylan films. 😊 (Just kidding—but I do love them!)
Whatever we do, let’s do it with full concentration, dedicating time, and keeping our minds alert and engaged. Staying present in the moment is crucial. When we are in a negative state, let’s recognize it and immediately shift out of it. Let’s try to see beyond what is visible.
To understand the messages that life is sending us, let’s WAKE UP from the deep sleep.
With love…
