I hope our new year brings beauty, leaving love, compassion, tolerance, and mercy at the doorstep of all humanity, so that it increases the number of good people. What does it mean to be a good person? How does one become a good person? Can everyone always be good to everyone else?
When you look at it, life is like a short film strip made up of moments that are choices—sometimes full of laughter, sometimes filled with pain, and sometimes still... Everyone is the hero of their own masterpiece, whether they realize it or not... Every hero is born into a labyrinth, unaware, but opens their eyes to a world in which they will exist through their choices. Heroes, either with free will or shaped by their subconscious, set a purpose for themselves and proceed with it... Some heroes burn, destroy, and turn everything to ashes for the sake of their purpose, while others act, knowing how their choices affect other people's lives. Should others’ happiness be sacrificed for their goal?
The hero who reaches their goal, leaving behind sorrowful hearts, justifies their choices to themselves over and over, savoring the pleasure of their success. But do you think they have put aside the choice to be a good person? Or is there a path they could have taken to reach the same goal without hurting anyone?
Thinking may seem burdensome to some heroes. Making choices by only thinking about themselves must seem simpler, more livable, as if the roles they take on in the movie don’t feel too heavy on them.
So, can one become a good person by sacrificing their happiness for the sake of others’ happiness? Sadly, when a hero moves forward by doing injustice to themselves and leaves broken hearts behind, they cannot be a good person.
So how does one become a good person? In every situation, every event, it’s our response that forces us into choices. That’s where the virtues with which we respond are important. Sometimes, being tolerant; sometimes, being compassionate, forgiving, or humorous... these choices can help us be a good person. After all, the ability to use virtues is what determines how good a person a hero can be.
May we have many years where heroes can easily make virtuous decisions, where virtues illuminate their paths, and where they are never abandoned until the very end of the movie...
With love.
